New Q1 Is Audi's Smallest Ever SUV
This is our first look at an actual Q1 prototype following previous scoops of test-mules built around the body shells of the existing VW Tiguan.
Riding on the shortest version of the VW Group's flexible MQB architecture instead of the current A1's older PQ25 platform, the Q1 will be similar in size to the Nissan Juke and GM's trio of small SUVs including the Buick Encore, Opel Mokka and Chevy Trax.
However, Audi is expected to borrow engines from the A1's lineup for the Q1, including a base 1.0-liter three-cylinder turbocharged petrol with 95PS (94hp), a 1.4-liter TFSI petrol, 1.6-liter diesels and possibly even the S1's 228hp 2.0-liter turbo-four for a sporty SQ1 variant. Later down the line, Audi could offer a plug-in hybrid variant as well since the MQB platform is compatible.
Base models will come with front wheel drive, but Audi's quattro all-wheel drive system will be offered as an option.
The tester we spied in Europe is wrapped from top to bottom in camouflage, yet it's pretty clear that the Q1 will look more like a 'baby' Q7 than a rugged A1, with some light hints at Audi's 2012 Crosslane Coupe concept.
Audi has confirmed that production of the new Q1 will kick off next year at the brand's Ingolstadt facility.
