Ohh, now I see why I couldn't find it. "this object can't be used in your country" hahaha. Makes sense, but thank you very much, all of you, for all the help...

If I were you, I wouldn't worry too much about getting a car as soon as you get here.

Settle in, see how public transportation can get you to wherever you want to be whenever en take it from there.
If after a couple of weeks/months you still feel like you need a car, you can still get one.

You're right, I should see how I'm doing with the buses and trams, and decide it afterwards. In fact I wouldn't be able to get it as soon as I get there anyway, I will have to use the money more urgent necessities and then start saving up for it. Maybe if I don't rush into it, hire a car on Cambio or apps like that when I absolutely need it and save up patiently, I can buy a better car a few years later... For those who responded thanks a lot for sharing your wise thoughts.

Quite ironic that on a car forum everybody tries to convince you not to buy a car...
Usually the discussions here are around ways to get some extra horsepower, or whether you need to choose for a black or a grey BMW M3.

Welcome in Belgium! I hope you will get a lot smarter here, so good luck with the study.

Hartelijk bedankt, Tommie1! It is good to know I'm an exception around here, I hope I'll be able to join your discussions in Dutch

Don't forget the highway between Ghent and Antwerp is one of the busiest in Belgium and in weekday's you'll lose a lot of time. Better to travel by train.

Although it seems like I'm postponing to buy a car for now, I will certainly keep that in my if I need to go that road one day ☺ Dank u!

Are they really banning them? Then what will the owners of those cars do? And you said "with a good lock" is theft common in Gent? Can you inform me about prices in public transportation?
Instead of arresting gangsters and drugs dealers they will arrest owners of classic cars. Less dangerous.

For transportation, if you take a subscription to public transportation, certainly as a student, you can get big discounts. If they are not on strike, public transport is pretty good. I did it all the time when I was studying (as most students actually), it has the added benefit that you have a good excuse to go out until the first morning train is scheduled.

PPS, off topic, but if you are from Turkey you will feel at home in Gent, there's a big community, lots of Turkish bakeries, butchers, restaurants, supermarkets, ... 'sleepstraat' and 'wondelgemstraat' are the place2be. You will be able to shop in your native language!

We also whine a lot. Our whinge fests can compete with the best of the British and the Russians. We're so good at it that if there were olympics for whinging we'd be convinced we wouldn't stand a chance.
