BP Ford Abu Dhabi team principal Malcolm Wilson has confirmed he will do everything he can to get Mikko Hirvonen the best points finish in Corsica.
Wilson said if the top four positions were unchanged going into the final stage (SS16), he would ask Francois Duval and Jari-Matti Latvala to slow down and allow Mikko past.
“We’re going to run through the next stage (SS15) as normal because we’ve seen this morning that anything can happen - and it still can - but we will review the situation after that,” said Wilson. “If things stay the same we will look to get Mikko the best possible chance of wining the drivers’ championship by moving him up to second.”
Wilson said he understood Hirvonen’s reluctance to go through with the plan but would do it anyway for the sake of both championships.
“That’s a normal thing,” said Wilson. “Mikko feels he got promoted into second last week and feels probably quite bad. But as he knows, we’ve got to try and win both championships. Okay, it’s going to be a long shot, but we would be kicking ourselves - and he would be kicking himself - if something did happen. It’s not an ideal situation but we have to do it to try and get the best result for the team and the driver.”
Francois Duval deliberately checked-in early to the pre-stage control, collecting a two-minute penalty and dropping behind Hirvonen in the overall standings. “I am so happy,” said Duval. That’s two rallies with no mistakes and no punctures. It’s been a long time since I’ve driven such a good car on tarmac.”
A different strategy was employed for Jari-Matti Latvala, who was told to check in nine minutes late, collect 90sec of penalty time and finish fourth. “We want to do everything we can for the team,” he said. “Of course personally I’m disappointed but nobody can take away the experience and the confidence I have got here. It’ll be a completely different story on the gravel rallies which follow.”
Allé ... er zijn blijkbaar al 2 ritten SS3/SS7 geschrapt
Er ligt 20 cm sneeuw op de proeven

The Clerk of the Course of Rally Japan has confirmed that one of Friday’s stages has been cancelled as a result of the snow which has fallen in recent days.
A statement read: ‘Due to abnormal weather and resulting deterioration of the road, SS3/7 is cancelled for safety reasons.’
The 13.67km Isepo section was to be run twice on Friday and was the longest of the day. Instead, competitors will follow an alternate road section to the start of the Pipaoi SS4/8 test. The rest of Friday’s itinerary is unchanged.
