We pushed the boat out and bought a brand new March 2009 ford s max individual 2.2TDI. Never again. It's a great car to drive but you won't get chance to do that if your experience is like ours. An immediate problem with oil gushing all over the engine bay which our local ford dealer took weeks and several attempts to fix (came back from the Scottish Borders on an AA low loader); an engine management issue when my wife took the key out of the ignition and the engine carried on running also took weeks to fix; air con packed in whilst in France with the footwells front and back awash with water (they spent days looking for a bodywork leak even the weather had been bone dry); bonnet catch broke resulting in the bonnet flying up - again, more than one go to fix; now another engine management failure warning light. Don't do it. It's a good car to drive and very practical if you have bikes, surfboards, drum kits etc. but it's a dog for reliability.

Een S-max uit 2009 kan nooit een 2.2Tdci zijn met 200pk. Dit is de 175 pk. Zoals elk merk heeft een auto voor de facelift allerlei problemen. De ene meer dan de andere.

DONT BUY THIS CAR. The car is slow. The 1.8 diesel is not powerful enough to get the car moving from a standstill. There is turbo lag, the turbo does not kick in until 2000 revs. Several times I have pulled out at turning and roundabouts, committing to the road only for the car to crawl out and barely move, much to the announce of other drivers. Have had several 'close calls' due to lack of movement of the car.
Got the x-pack. The upgraded seat coverings are nice and the panoramic roof lets lots of light in. The 18 inch alloys require 235/45 extra load tyres which cost £180-230, cheaper depending on how many you buy. They do not last long either, I get about 16-18,000 miles.
Interior looks better than its rivals but is not hard wearing. Plastics scratch easily and bits have snapped off, particularly around the handbrake.
Numerous electrical problems. Tailgate spontaneously opened whilst driving. Ford had car twice before fixing. Heated window strips malfunctioned, the whole window was replaced. Keep getting blown brake bulbs. I have replaced the left 3 times in as many months, the right twice in the last 6. the top brake light in the tailgate has blown.
Bonnet cable snapped 2 months after the warranty ran out, was replaced by ford after 'some discussion'.
The car is too expensive to service at main dealer. £350 large service. Got service done plus front discs and pads for £260 from local garage.
Would replace car but cannot afford to.

Nice car but expensive.
The good: Great looking car with very stylish lines. Very comfortable. Nice slick gear change from the Twin clutch. Headlights that turn in the direction of steering.
The bad: Poor paint job. Turning circle of a cow running at speed. The tailgate is the heaviest i have ever come across! The black plastic console scratch's just by being near it!
In all, a very practical car with lots of room but way too expensive for what you get.

Bought new July 2010. When delivered door panels did not line up, vibration from front which got worse over time and is still not fixed. Steering is jittery and vague, handling is not like a car despite what the media says, it is awful. The engine is underpowered, struggles with even a moderate load. Fuel economy 42ish on long motorway run, 38 overall. Inside the space is fantastic, as is the level of equipment, driving position very good, although seats uncomfortable for long journeys. Auto lights and wipers are a nightmare, sunlight and shadows set them off, but it takes a lot of rain to make them work. DAB radio loses signal too often, FM radio has very poor reception. Tyre wear slightly higher than usual and replacement tyre is around £180. No spare tyre only powder. DVD system very good but the unit is mounted under front passenger seat & makes changing discs difficult. I have found Ford dealers to be disingenuous or incompetent. Will replace this car with VW as soon as I can afford to do so, and steer clear of Ford. And to the Peugeot 5008 reviewer who said Buy British, Buy an SMAX...it's built in Genk, Belgium.
4 out of 5 stars Ford offers a couple of turbocharged petrol engines – a 1.6 and a 2.0 – but most buyers will go for one of the TDCi diesels. The smallest of these produces just 114bhp and needs to be worked very hard even when the car is lightly loaded, but the others are all strong and flexible. Pick of the bunch is the 138bhp 2.0-litre.
Ride & Handling
4 out of 5 stars MPVs don't get any more enjoyable to drive than the S-Max, which seems to shrink around you when you're behind the wheel. Sharp, well weighted steering, plenty of grip and good body control all contribute to the S-Max’s remarkable agility. The price you pay for this dynamic prowess is a slightly firm ride, which can lead to your passengers getting jostled around at low speeds.
Refinement
4 out of 5 stars Although the S-Max lets in more wind noise than many family saloons, it does a great job of shutting out road- and suspension noise, so it’s still an impressively refined cruiser. The 2.0-litre engines help because they’re quiet and silky-smooth.
Yeah right, ga toch slapen man.
Ford zit in hetzelfde segment als Opel. Een gewoon standaardmerk dat nergens echt in uitblinkt, en vooral ook zijn problemen heeft.
