Ik mag over 'n dikke maand met 'n Volvo-motor op pad: de 2.5 in de Focus ST... Als die evengoed klinkt als in Volvo's...

                      • Volvo XC70 All Terrain

With three years of SEMA history behind it, Volvo Cars of North America, LLC (VCNA) is unleashing perhaps its wildest concept vehicle yet for the 2005 show in Las Vegas, Nevada. Built in conjunction with Volvo aftermarket specialists, ipd, the XC70 All Terrain (AT) has been extensively modified to handle almost anything terra firma can dish out.

Based on the production version 2005 Volvo XC70, this highly modified one-off concept vehicle features an array of performance and off-road upgrades and was inspired by the legendary Baja 1000 Mexican desert race. And like its racing brethren, the XC70 AT is harnessed with a lot of horsepower under its hood.

The XC70 AT features a 2.5-liter inline 5-cylinder engine that is normally found in the V70 R sport wagon. But where the V70 R makes an impressive 300 horsepower, the XC70 AT, with its Garrett GT2835R turbocharger and ipd/MTE Stage III software upgrade makes 408 horsepower at 6,200 rpm. Keeping the hot-blooded engine cool is an Aquamist in-cylinder intercooling system and an extra large top-mounted intercooler. Low restriction 3-inch stainless steel exhaust pipes emit a husky sound that would be more familiar coming from a Volvo XC90 V8.

Producing an amazing 398 lb-ft of torque at a low 4,000 rpm, the XC70 AT uses the same 6-speed automatic transmission that is standard in the XC90 V8 and the 2006 V70 R. Making sure all four wheels get the most of the broad torque curve is Volvo’s legendary fully automatic all-wheel-drive system by Haldex. If any tire slips more than one-seventh of a rotation, Haldex automatically applies torque to the tires with the most traction.

Even with all this power and torque, every desert racer has to stop sometime. Thankfully the XC70 AT is fitted with the appropriate equipment. The fully functioning ABS features huge 13-inch cross-drilled Brembo rotors, each with 4-piston calipers. Aggressive 20x10-inch KMC XD wheels and 285/50-20 BF Goodrich All Terrain tires chew through almost anything and add to the XC70 AT’s intimidating stance.

New on the production XC70 for 2005 is Volvo’s remarkable Four-C adaptive chassis ride system with Sport and Comfort modes. Taking this concept to the next level, ipd developed a custom fully independent air ride suspension offering 4-inches of adjustability via dash-mounted buttons. Add in the ipd designed 4-inch lift kit and the XC70 AT can ride up to 8 inches higher than the production Volvo XC70. To keep body roll in check, ipd 25-mm front and 28-mm rear anti-sway bars have been fitted.

                                  • 180 hp D5 in the Volvo S40 and V50 – the choice for connoisseurs in the segment
                                    • More powerful diesel range in the Volvo S40 and V50
                                    • Production start in Ghent in early 2006
                                    • Annual target 10,000 cars

Volvo Cars' new D5 engine is now finding its way under the bonnet of the Volvo S40 and Volvo V50.

With 180 horsepower on tap, the in-house developed five-cylinder turbodiesel is a powerful complement to the two four-cylinder alternatives offering 109 and 136 horsepower.

The Volvo S40 D5 and Volvo V50 D5 will be unveiled at the Bologna motor show in the beginning of December. The first cars will be built in the factory in Ghent, Belgium, in early 2006.

The Volvo S40 D5 and Volvo V50 D5 will initially only be available with a five-speed automatic transmission.
The compact D5 engine will also be fitted to the new Volvo C70 during 2006, and the annual production target for the three models is 10,000 cars.
For the Volvo S40 and V50 this means that the D5 will account for about 10 percent of the two models’ total diesel sales in Europe.
“With these models, we are appealing to the segment’s true connoisseurs. They are often business people who cover long distances. They demand both top-class performance and low fuel consumption. With the D5 engine, we meet both requirements and in addition spice up the package with a generous measure of comfort and driving pleasure, says Peter Ewerstrand, project manager of the Volvo S40 and V50. He adds:
“With 180 horsepower, we are considerably boosting our competitiveness in the segment and we are convinced that customers will see the Volvo S40 D5 and V50 D5 as attractive alternatives to other premium diesel cars.

                                    • German Team Prosports Racing is developing a brand new race version of the Volvo S40. The car, which is going to feature a very spectacular bodywork, is destined to race in the German BF Goodrich Endurance Championship and the 24 hrs. on the Nürburgring from 2007 onwards. PSR team principal Danny Berk schedules the first tests and the first test races for early 2006.

The project is based on a plan from Bernhard Mühlner, who had developed the ultra-successful Volvo S60 for the German Endurance Championship and the Nürburgring 24 Hour Race. Mühlner had planned to develop a Super 2000 version of the Volvo S40 as a succession of the S60 project. The cars would have been built along the lines of the FIA World Touring Car Championship rules. Danny Berk bought two of the S40 frames that Mühlner Motorsport had used to lay the foundations of the Super 2000 project. “The first chassis is just being fitted with a roll cage and should arrive at our workshops in December, says Berk. “We will then decide the precise technical specifications for the Volvo S40. This mainly concerns engine and gearbox. Thanks to the special rulebook of the German Endurance Championship, there are quite a few exciting possibilities in this area. “First choice would be to use the further developed engine-/ gearbox-package of the successful S60. But we could also go for an engine with a very huge capacity – like the V8 from the XC90 - and we might as well opt for a turbocharged version. Four-wheel drive is also an option, reveals Berk. „We are still evaluating which specification will offer the best package. One thing is certain, though: The car will feature a wide body and a spectacular aerodynamic package. And it will be a car only eligible to race on the Nordschleife. We don´t want to enter any other championships at this stage even though there are various possibilities in Europe.“

Long-time Volvo regular Ulli Andree (40) will feature a prominent role in the project. "I was already very fascinated from Mühlner's original idea to develop an S40 for racing because I think the car has got a huge potential, he says. “When Danny Berk told me he'd continue with the project, there was never a shadow of a doubt that I wanted to be part of it. So I will race the S60 in the championship and contribute to the development of the S40.“ Another influential member of the development team will be Jürgen Kühl, the former long-lasting head of development at Volvo Car Germany GmbH. “The project is very ambitious and extremely promising at the same time,“ states the native of Hamburg. “I´ll do everything I can to make use of my knowledge and my contacts within the Volvo group to get as much support as possible. I see it as a very welcome huge challenge – also for me personally.“

Berk admits the good season with the Volvo S60, which he purchased of Mühlner at the start of the year, prompted him into the S40 decision: "The finishing of the car is just great. The car shows just how sporty a Volvo can be – don´t forget the car has won it´s class at the Nürburgring 24 Hour Race no less than three times in a row and further more has achieved some 20 victories in the championship so far. But in spite it being a sophisticated car, we as a team immediately got to grip with. All this encouraged me to take on the job with the Volvo S40.“ As soon as the first frame is fitted with a roll cage, Berk plans to start the work in earnest: "Given that the suppliers are in a position to deliver the parts we need when we'd like to get them, we would love to start testing as early as February. We don't yet know in which races we will compete in 2006 – but we'll definitely take the car to the track for the odd race in order to intensify testing. The first full season is supposed to be 2007. Next year, we will also continue to field our now being further developed Volvo S60 – and we'd like to upgrade that project to two cars with a slightly wider body, some modifications on the chassis and the aero-package - with Evolve-parts - plus stronger 5-cylinder-engines. The target is to improve the lap times to some 9.00 Minutes to be still competitive next year which we are very confident of."

                                      • December 8, 2005 Volvo develops digital jukebox

Volvo is getting down with the kids with a digital in-car jukebox.

The cartridge can store up 400 CDs' worth of music, or 500 hours, and it slots into a unit fitted out of sight in the same way as a normal CD multi-changer.

The jukebox is worked by the car's normal stereo controls and has been developed with automotive music specialists Phatnoise. It can be fitted to S60, S80, V70 and XC70 models.

The same line-up of Volvos can also be fitted with Swedes' new iPod adapter kit, which costs £107 plus fitting charges.

This adapter sits in the centre arm rest and is connected directly to the car's stereo and, like the jukebox, works through the usual stereo controls. It works with all iPods except the Shuffle version.
