Interessante urban legen over mclaren:
Well 6 LMs were built in total, including the LM prototype. Two of the production versions were finished in black like what is pictured above, though one may have had a red stripe instead of the blue you see in that picture. That leaves the other four painted the traditional Papaya Orange. The number 5 didn't so much have to do with the color - it was moreso that they were building one LM for each of the 5 cars that completed the 1995 LeMans 24 Hour race.
When McLaren announced their plan to build the LMs, I believe they did intend for them all to be identical. However, when you have a wealthy customer like the Brunei Royal Family with tastes for something unique, somtimes you have to compromise the plan which is what it would seem McLaren chose to do. The BRF purchased a total of three LMs - chassis LM1 & LM4 were the black ones and LM5 was the last of their trio which was painted Orange.
Another great thing about this photo in my opinion is that it proves this was how the cars were originally finished, as some doubters in the past believed the cars could have been repainted for the BRF after they were built.
McLaren's story in many cases even after all the cars were produced was that all the LMs were painted Papaya Orange and since it was repeated so many times in so many fairly official places, some found it difficult to believe these black LMs really existed.
Recently McLaren released a book called "McLaren: The Cars 1964-2008" and in that book on the pages devoted to the LM they do confirm the existence of the Black LMs. Its really been the amount of conflicting information and the lack of real photos that have kept this as one of the key McLaren mysteries over the years so it is great to finally put any speculation to the contrary to rest.
I've been asked many times over the years about the existence of these cars and I've often stated that I believed the real proof would surface eventually. Still though, I am surprised that it finally did and from a US car magazine no less.
