We kondigden al eerder aan dat Aston Martin van de V12 Zagato racer ook een gelimiteerde serie voor de openbare weg zou gaan maken. De aantallen en de prijs zijn nu bekend.

De Aston Martin V12 Zagato wordt, zoals dat gebruikelijk is met de Astons van de Italiaanse koetsbouwer, een zeer exclusieve verschijning. De Britten bouwen slechts 150 exemplaren. Ook de prijs is weer indrukwekkend. De V12 Zagato, die is gebaseerd op de V12 Vantage kost 330.000 pond ofwel 364.000 euro – zónder belastingen welteverstaan.
Zagato en Aston Martin vieren met deze auto hun vijftigjarige samenwerking. Het meest recente wapenfeit was de DB7 Zagato – die was met een productie van 99 stuks zelfs nog exclusiever dan deze nieuwe schepping. Van de DB AR1, die de roadsterversie daarvan was, werden 99 exemplaren voor klanten gebouwd. Het honderdste exemplaar bleef achter in de fabriekscollectie.

Aston Martin V12 Zagato revealed

The road car variant of the new Aston Martin V12 Zagato, which will go into production from the middle of next year, has been revealed.

The hand-built Zagato is based on the V12 Vantage and features a body of aluminium and carbonfibre. The race-bred machine is powered by the Warwickshire-based firm's six-litre engine, which produces 510bhp and 420lb ft of torque.

Developed half a century after the introduction of the iconic DB4GT Zagato, the new V12 Zagato broke cover at the Villa D’Este Concours on Lake Como, Italy, in May. It won the coveted design award for the concept and prototypes class.

Two prototypes were then honed during endurance races at the Nürburgring, including the 24-hour event at the German track in June.

The pair of Zagato racing machines will appear on Aston’s Frankfurt motor show display next month, along with the One-77 supercar and the recently launched Virage and Vantage S.

The competition specials have been nicknamed ‘Zig’ and ‘Zag’ by Aston technicians. ‘Zig’ will appear in full racing specification and features a full aerodynamic package including front splitter, dive planes, rear diffuser and spoiler.

‘Zag’ – the car that Autocar tested last month – has been converted back into a road-spec show car to give an indication of how the finished customer cars will look when they are built next year.

Blijft in mijn ogen toch een ongelooflijk knap ding. Springt onmiddellijk in het oog. De productieversie van de V12 Zagato maakt op 15 februari zijn debuut in Koeweit.

Eindelijk is Aston Martin klaar met het bijschaven van de V12 Zagato. De auto is nu helemaal klaar voor (beperkte) productie!

Het begin van de relatie tussen Aston Martin en carrosserieontwerper Zagato ligt alweer vijftig jaar achter ons, toen de DB4 GT opdook. Om dat te vieren zagen we vorig jaar mei voor het eerst de conceptversie van deze V12 Zagato. Een raceversie nam in juni deel aan de 24 uur van de Nürburgring. Nu is ook de straatauto helemaal gereed, volgende week maakt-ie z’n debuut tijdens het Concours d’Elegance in Koeweit.
Technisch maakt deze speciale Aston gebruik van componenten afkomstig van verschillende zustermodellen. Zo staat de auto op een aangepast platform van de Vantage. De panelen, zoals de deurpanelen en het dak, zijn met de hand gemaakt; de voor- en achterspoiler en diverse andere onderdelen zijn opgetrokken uit koolstofvezel. Onder de kap vinden we dezelfde V12 als in de V12 Vantage: een 6,0-liter motor met 510 pk, gekoppeld aan een handgeschakelde zesbak. De topsnelheid ligt op 305 km/h, de sprint van nul tot honderd duurt ongeveer 4,2 seconden.
De V12 Zagato wordt bepaald geen goedkope auto: Aston Martin zet 'm voor 405.000 pond voor je deur neer.

Aston V12 Zagato reaches production

It first made waves at the Villa d'Este last May; from there it raced as a prototype in June at the gruelling Nürbürgring 24hrs, and last September made an appearance at the Frankfurt motor show. All as a full-blooded, big-winged cabin-less racecar.

Next week, in Kuwait, Aston Martin will finally reveal the road-going production version of its lightly expensive and gently unique Aston Martin V12 Zagato. And it will look like this.

The new V12 builds on just over 50 years of history between the British and Italian firms, the first DB4 GTs with Zagato bodies appearing as racecars in 1961. Think of the new V12 Zagato as Aston's Golden anniversary present, to itself.

Aston Martin's chief, Dr Ulrich Bez, said: "Our relationship with Zagato stretches back more than 50 years. Together in that time we have created a series of very special cars. The first - the DB4GT Zagato - is a true icon: fast, beautiful and incredibly desirable. In the V12 Zagato I believe we have captured the spirit of that car and combined it with a confident twist of modernity to give it a character all of its own."

Each Zagato takes around 2,000 man hours to complete, and is constructed from hand-crafted aluminium and carbon fibre, just like the One-77. The car sits on a V12 Vantage platform with that body, complete with 'double-bubble' roof, bonded to the aluminium structure of the base car, designed by Aston Martin design chief Marek Reichmann's team in Britain. In fact, the Aston designer insists the new Zagato takes cues from the past, but forges a new design language for future Astons.

The less said about that rear spoiler though, the better. Yes, by being big and shouty and fixed, it remains true to the original racer's pedigree, but surely a more subtler appendage would have benefitted the rare Aston?

Elsewhere, there's also a lovely bespoke interior, and the major hardware of the donor Vantage remains unchanged, so you're looking at a 6.0-litre V12 with 510bhp and 420lb of torque. Just 150 are being built, and they'll cost £330,000 plus taxes. No need to guess too hard as to its intended clientele, judging by its launch venue...
