Alfa Romeo's only Italian adversary in motor racing in the 1930s was Maserati. Based in Bologna the firm was originally led by four Maserati brothers. The death of one of them, Alfieri, was a huge blow for the firm. Racing successes were still scored but financially Maserati was slipping. In 1937 the remaining three brothers sold the company to the Orsi brothers. One condition in the sales contract was that the brothers would keep on designing cars for the Orsis for another 10 years. When they were freed from the contract in 1947 the brothers immediatly started a new company, OSCA (Officine Specializzate Construzione Automobili).

Again, the focus of the brothers was completely on building racing cars. One of their very first designs, the small MT4, was a success right out of the box, scoring many class victories, with as highlight a 1953 LeMans class victory. OSCA also supplied 1500 cc and 1600 cc twin cam engines to Fiat for their high performance cars.

At the end of the 50s the brothers started to work on their first OSCA road car. The heart of the car was the 1600 'four' also supplied to Fiat. It was installed in a tubular chassis with independet front suspension. Depending on the body the rear suspension was also independent. Fissore bodied cars were equipped with a live axle and leaf springs whereas the GTS fitted with Zagato bodies were featured all-round independent suspension. The engines were also available in various states of tune from 105 bhp up to 140 bhp for the GTS.

The GTS competition version had to fight against fierce competition. Porsches quad-cam Carrera version of the 356 dominated the 1600 cc class.

In 1963 the brothers sold the company to Augusta. They did design work for Augusta until 1966. One of their final designs was a desmodromic four cylinder engine.
