Michael Schumacher, who has won 5 World Championship title in Formula One, tested the Evolution II back in 1992. (World Champion with Benetton Ford, Benetton Renault and 3 titles with Ferrari) For the record, Mika Hakkinen, 2 times World Champion with the team West McLaren Mercedes-Benz, also tested the EVOII. However, Mika also test drove the race version which had about 390 hp.
The main goal of that test was for Michael Schumacher to give is opinion about what was the sportiest Mercedes in 1992. The cars Schumi was comparing were:
- The Brabus 500 E, V8, (~430hp)
- The 190 E 3.2 liter AMG (238hp)
- The 190 E 2.3 liter AMG (195hp)
- The Carlsson 190 E 3.5 (~250hp)
- The 190 E 2.5 EVOII (235hp)
After testing all of these stunning machines, Schumacher concluded that the winner was the Mercedes EVOII. Although he admits that it took him quiet a while to get use to the huge DTM wing, this was not the important bit.
On very fast corners, he said that the "big rear wing" totally fulfills its role: "it gives the car more down-force and keeps it well on the line while cornering". According to Schumi himself, the EVOII is a car that combines all the necessary ingredients for a sport car: "this car has great handling, a superb braking system, a rough engine and a fantastic chassis.
On the other hand, he admits: "In terms of engine power, I am slightly disappointed, the tuners such as Brabus offer more power".
However, concerning the chassis, their is nothing to complain about. The Evo II offers the best chassis by fare. Not only the car always has plenty of grip, it is also very well balanced. Harder you drive the car, more balanced the car becomes.
Michael Schumacher conclusion?
"The sportiest Mercedes is not build by any of the tuners. No, it is not from Brabus or Carlsson, it directly comes out of the Mercedes-Benz factory"
