Lotus plans to introduce a lightweight crossover SUV in 2019, which coincides with the patented images leaked onto the web

Patent drawings of what appear to be the upcoming Lotus SUV have appeared online, which is planned to enter production in 2019.

The sketches reveal a typically sleek and sporty crossover SUV that bears similarities to the Porsche Macan in terms of proportions. From the front, a large grille and air vents under the lights can be picked out, but the SUV doesn't appear to adopt any design cues from Lotus' current product range.

Sketches of the rear show a more coupe-like roofline, similar to the BMW X4. Another notable feature at the back is a prominent rear diffuser, roof spolier and two large exhausts, hinting further high performance.

The new images could indicate that Lotus' plans to build an SUV have been accelerated since Chinese manufacturer Geeley took a majority stake in the Norfolk-based car company.

Back in 2015, Lotus CEO Jean-Marc Gales told Auto Express about the brand’s plan to introduce a lightweight SUV “within the next five years”, with an eye to selling it in the Chinese market first. He said: “[It will be] much lighter and faster than any other SUV currently on offer.”

Lotus is the latest sports car brand to join in on the performance SUV craze, with Lamborghini and even Ferrari joining in on the act. Alfa Romeo recently set the Nurburgring lap record for SUV’s with a time in under eight minutes courtesy of its Stelvio Quadrifoglio, lapping it quicker than most sports cars.

First-Ever Lotus SUV Test Mule Spotted Near Company’s HQ

We’ve known to expect a Lotus-badged SUV for years now, especially after possible patent drawings were leaked back in 2017. Then, last year we had the company’s CEO all but confirm the vehicle, followed by multiple reports regarding its underpinnings.

Now, we have our first ever look at a prototype, albeit in test mule form, as it is wearing an old Lynk & Co 01 body in an attempt to hide its large wheels and low, aggressive stance.

Also, the fact that it was spotted hear Lotus’ headquarters in Hethel, Norfolk, is kind of a dead giveaway.

In case you’re wondering why the automaker would choose a Lynk & Co shell to hide the vehicle’s underpinnings, keep in mind that Lotus is now owned by the same company that owns both Volvo and Lynk & Co, namely Geely – who holds a controlling 51% share in the British sports carmaker.

Looking at the test mule, there are a few things we should touch on, like the general fit of those large wheels underneath the wheel arches. The Lynk & Co body was clearly modified to accommodate the wheels as well as what appears to be a wider track.

What’s even more interesting though is that high voltage sticker in the corner of the windshield, which together with the taped up fuel cap and absence of any visible exhaust tips, could indicate that the upcoming Lotus SUV will either be fully electric or partially electrified (plug-in hybrid).

Once ready, the Lotus SUV will “go round bends like nothing else in its segment,” said the automaker’s chief executive, Jean Marc Gales. The sporty people hauler will also share many components with the Volvo XC90 and XC60, among them numerous tech bits such as the Swedish brand’s touchscreen infotainment system.

As for performance, even if the Lotus ends up using a four-cylinder unit (courtesy of Volvo’s SPA platform), we know how good they are at extracting a great deal of power from small capacity engines. In other words, we’d be surprised if this SUV would put down less than 400 HP.

Lotus Lambda Crossover Rendered Showing New Step For British Brand

It's still about two years away from going on sale.

Lotus allegedly intends to refer to its upcoming crossover as the Lambda, and the model should debut in 2022. To make the already long wait a little easier, check out this new rendering from Motor.es depicting the front and back of the British brand's first utility vehicle.

The design features a mix of smooth curves and heavy crases. In front, there's a rectangular grille and smaller openings in the corners. Pointy headlights follow the arch of the fender.

An arching roofline creates a sporty silhouette. The rear of the bodywork comes to a point to attach to the top and creates one of the exterior design's more eye-catching elements.

The rear has a steeply angled window. There are large, circular headlights that look somewhat odd because they don't have a connection to any other parts of the exterior.

After lots of rumors, Lotus confirmed the development of its crossover in 2018 and indicated the model would take around four years to enter the market. The Lambda will use Volvo underpinnings because of both automaker's ownership by China's Geely.

Lotus would offer the Lambda with a combustion engine and an electric version. Unfortunately, there are no specifics about either option at this time, but Geely has an extensive parts bin to pick from, including Lynk & Co and Polestar.

Lotus promises that the Lambda would stick by the brand's sports car legacy of being a sharp handler. "We're a sports car brand. The focus of the brand is around the driver and the driving experience. That's what the DNA of Lotus is," Lotus CEO Phil Popham said in 2019. "However, we believe the brand has the potential to go beyond just sports cars. We will move into other segments over the course of time."

Ook het design van Lotus' Type 132 - die waarschijnlijk nog een echte modelnaam krijgt - maakt ongetwijfeld te tongen los.

Lotus' elektrische SUV heeft geniepig de wereld in turende kijkers en een naar achteren toe aflopende daklijn die bij de C-stijl de oplopende schouderlijn ontmoet. Geheel volgens de richtlijnen in het Grote Handboek Autodesign 2022 heeft de SUV achterlichten die de volledige breedte van de bilpartij beslaan. De achterkant is op meer vlakken bijzonder, bovenaan de achterruit zien we namelijk een uit twee delen opgebouwde dakspoiler. Te midden ervan zit een opvallende module, een exemplaar dat we ook aan de voorkant van het dak zien. Dit zijn ongetwijfeld de lidar-modules. Inderdaad, de elektrische SUV van Lotus moet ook nog eens autonoom zijn weg door het verkeer kunnen vinden.

De Type 132 blijft niet de enige EV van Lotus. In 2023 komt er namelijk een elektrische vierdeurscoupé bij (Type 133). Een jaar daarna breidt Lotus uit met een tweede elektrische SUV. Pas in 2026 volgt een elektrische sportauto. Lotus EV's krijgen een accupakket met een capaciteit van maximaal 99,6 kWh en worden in hun krachtigste vorm 884 pk sterk, al komen er waarschijnlijk ook minder buitenissig gemotoriseerde motorversies.
