Create-A-Car Competition returns for Junior Festival of Speed

                                16/5/2006

Specifically designed for kids and families, the Junior Festival of Speed continues to grow in popularity. In the Incredible Goodwood Create-A-Car Competition, children are once again able to draw a fantasy car at the Festival, and the winning design will then be brought to life over the three days of the Goodwood Revival (on September 1.2.3) by Modeltec, creators of Goodwood’s famous Wacky Races cars. The lucky winner will then be taken around the circuit by none other than Sir Stirling Moss in the finished car.

As well as the Create-A-Car area, which displays last year’s winning design by eight-year-old Emma Hutchinson of Leamington Spa, the Junior Festival of Speed also features its popular Big Top circus and two art tents, offering painting, pottery, face painters, Punch & Judy and a caricaturist.

Other attractions include driving simulators; the Sony Playstation II rig; Team Extreme with their radical skating and boarding; and the opportunity to race the latest in high-tech slot cars; plus the hands-on excitement and exhilaration of the activities field. Keep an eye out also for the latest full-size Wacky Racer – The Arkansas Chugabug driven by Luke and Blubber Bear. ©Dastardly & Muttley and the Wacky Races, and all related characters and elements are trademarks of Hanna-Barbera. © Hanna Barbera and Heatter-Quigley.

Kinderen kunnen dus een auto tekenen die dan ook daadwerkelijk wordt gemaakt.

Essential support from the Festival’s Sponsors

                                  16/5/2006

The Festival could not take place without essential sponsorship from a host of key benefactors. This year Goodwood is delighted to announce new partnerships with Land Rover, which will provide sensational all-terrain driving demonstrations throughout the weekend using its unique Terrapod and G4 extreme obstacle packages. These unique metal off-road courses simulate a variety of terrain, including steel inclines and rocky surfaces, thereby demonstrating Land Rover’s off-road capabilities, including hill descent control and electronic traction control. Land Rover will also provide its latest Range Rover Sport Supercharged to act as course car during the Supercar Run.

In addition, the Festival depends on a wide variety of support from many automotive industry manufacturers – including Alfa Romeo, Aston Martin, Audi, BMW, Cosworth, Ferrari, Ford, General Motors, Honda, Jaguar, Mercedes-Benz, Nissan, Peugeot, Porsche, Renault, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars and Toyota. Please see the separate story about the cars brought by these leading manufacturers.

Auctioneer Bonhams stages its long-standing Summer Sale of historic cars and automobilia on the Friday of the Festival, and the Cartier ‘Style et Luxe’ takes place throughout the weekend on the private lawn of Goodwood House. As ever, the timing of all cars on the hillclimb and Forest Rally Stage is achieved using technology pioneered by Unisys, and the cars are kept in fine fettle thanks to the assistance of Unipart Automotive and BP Ultimate – the UK's leading advanced performance, emissions reducing fuel range.

Media partners Sunday Times ‘Driving’ assist with the popular Supercar Run for the motor industry’s latest and greatest road cars, including a dedicated supplement in the newspaper, whilst Autocar is the Festival’s official magazine partner and Capital Gold Radio features the event in its live radio broadcasts. Luxury brand dunhill – which originally produced driving clothing for gentleman – supports the exclusive Drivers’ Club. Veuve Clicquot again provides all of the champagne, Murphy’s Fastflow is available on-site and mineral water comes courtesy of Hildon Water. Lloyds TSB Private Banking and Air BP also offer valuable assistance.

To order advance tickets, please contact the Ticket Hotline by telephone on +44 1243 755055, fax on +44 1243 755058 or email via: bookings@goodwood.co.uk; otherwise, book online via the Online Ticket Section of this website.

The World’s leading manufacturers bring their finest museum pieces

                                    16/5/2006

The Festival is the only event in the world that attracts the rarest and most significant machinery from the beginnings of motor sport to the present day. Goodwood’s unique relationship with the world’s motor industry ensures that the finest museum-piece racing cars come to the Festival in force. Expect to see:

Alfa Romeo’s rich history remembered. As ever, a wonderful collection of Alfas will come to Goodwood, many from Alfa Romeo’s museum collection in Italy. Highlights include:
1924 Alfa Romeo P2 – now running for the first time in decades, the first great Alfa Romeo Grand Prix racing car, which was a dominant force in the 1920s, will drive at the Festival. It is the only survivor of its precise type in the world.
1923 Alfa Romeo RL ‘Targa Florio’ – adapted from the production road car, this fine-handling sports version won the Targa Florio outright in 1923
1932 Alfa Romeo 8C Monza – a beautifully original example of Alfa’s classic racer, which was raced on the Targa Florio in 1931
1934 Alfa Romeo Tipo B (P3) – The archetypal pre-war racer, and the world’s first successful centre-line single-seater, in which Tazio Nuvolari drove perhaps his finest race at the Nürburgring in 1935
1935 Alfa Romeo 8C-35 – Magnificent and rarely-seen ex-Tazio Nuvolari GP car, which carried the fight to the all-conquering German ‘Silver Arrows’
1938 Alfa Romeo 308C – rare evolution of the 8C-35, which formed the basis of the post-war ‘Alfetta’
1951 Alfa Romeo 159 ‘Alfetta’ – the dominant GP car in the early post-war years
1965 Alfa Romeo 1600 GTA – works driver Jochen Rindt won the first ever TransAm race at Sebring in this car
1972 Alfa Romeo Tipo 33 TT3 – Alfa's Autodelta works team took 2nd and 3rd overall on the Targa Florio in these fabulous cars in 1972
1975 Alfa Romeo 33 TT 12 – wonderful championship sports car like that in which Nino Vaccarella and Arturo Merzario (who will both appear at the Festival) won the penultimate Targa Florio

Aston Martin contrasts its ultimate performance cars – old and new. Aston Martin recognises its heritage with the wonderful World Championship-winning DBR1 sports-racing car in action on the hill. It will be joined by the magnificent new DBR9 racing car, which took the famous marque back to Le Mans last summer. In the Sunday Times ‘Driving’ Supercar Run, it is hoped that the new DBS makes one of its first public appearances.

Audi celebrates its mighty Auto Union heritage. More than seventy years since the revolutionary rear-engined Auto Union took Grand Prix racing by storm, Audi honours the legacy of its pre-war racing division with a staggering display of these evocative cars. Meanwhile, former World Champion Hannu Mikkola drives an Audi Quattro on the Forest Rally Stage, having spent the winter acting as Goodwood’s consultant during the redesign of the course. Expect to see:
1935 Auto Union Type A – the world’s first successful rear-engined, all-independent suspension GP racing car
1936 Auto Union Type C – the breath-taking V16 car in which Bernd Rosemeyer won the European Drivers’ Championship
1937 Auto Union Type C/D Bergwagen – this amazing time machine, which was preserved in the USSR for decades, was Auto Union’s weapon of choice for the European Mountainclimb Championship, using a Type C engine in a Type D frame and twin rear wheels for traction!
1936 Auto Union Type D – stunning recreation of the supercharged V16 ‘titan’ that won the 1938 Italian and Donington GPs
1983 Audi A2 Quattro – the archetypal flared-arch Quattro in which Hannu Mikkola and Stig Blomqvist won world titles in 1983 and ’84 will be in action on the Forest Rally Stage
1985 Audi Quattro Sport Evo 2 – for the first time, it is expected that the flame-spitting short wheelbase Quattro Sport will be in action on the Forest Rally Stage. This car was the last and fastest of the Group B Quattros, producing 550bhp and bristling in aerodynamic aids, and is arguably the most awesome car ever to tackle a WRC special stage
1988 Audi 200 Quattro TransAm – this incredible 720bhp all-wheel drive car put to good use the technology developed by Audi for Group B rallying, dominating the IMSA GTO category in 1989 with Hurley Haywood (who drives at Goodwood) and Walter Röhrl

BMW celebrates 40 years of touring car success. This year, BMW focuses on its touring car heritage, with a staggering collection of famous tin-tops in action on the hill, including:
1966 BMW 2000Ti – winner of the Spa 24 Hours and the first touring car to lap the Nürburgring in less than 10 minutes
1976 BMW 3.0CSL ‘Batmobile’ – this Group 2 racer was built for John Fitzpatrick to contest the 1976 Spa 24 Hours, and also raced in the Silverstone TT that year
1977 BMW 2002 ‘Schnitzer’ – this amazing 1.4-litre turbo with aerodynamics inspired by the 3.0CSL ‘Batmobile’ proved virtually invincible in Group 5 modified saloon racing, with Harald Ertl winning the German title
1987 BMW M3 GpA – The most successful touring car in the history of BMW won the one-off 1987 Touring Car World Championship with Roberto Ravaglia, the European Championship with Winnie Vogt and the German Championship with Eric van der Poele. From 1988-1992 the M3 took National Championships in Germany, Italy and Britain, plus the European Championship, and was 4 times winner at 24 hours of Spa-Francorchamps
2006 BMW Sauber F1.06 – BMW’s all-new 2.5-litre F1 car, which is a result of collaboration with the former Sauber team
See separate story for information on BMW motorcycles at the Festival

Cosworth contrasts old and new. To celebrate its role in the history of Grand Prix racing, an array of Cosworth-powered competition cars will be in action on the hill, from the first DFV-powered Lotus to hopefully the brand new Williams-Cosworth V8 F1 car. Expect to see:
1968 Lotus-Cosworth 49B – the car that established the DFV as the must-have power unit in Formula One. Jim Clark proved unbeatable in the new car whenever it finished, and team-mate Graham Hill went on to win the World title in this ground-breaking car
1968 Matra-Cosworth MS80 – the car in which Jackie Stewart scored a famous win at the Nürburgring in atrocious conditions, while driving with a broken wrist
1972 Lotus-Cosworth 72 – One of the most successful F1 designs of all time, competitive for six seasons and a winner of the Drivers’ and Constructors’ Championships twice each, with Jochen Rindt and Emerson Fittipaldi the successful drivers
1973 Tyrrell-Cosworth 006 – the car in which the most successful British driver of all time, Jackie Stewart, won six races on the way to his third and final World title
                                    1976 McLaren-Cosworth M23 – James Hunt’s evocative title winner
1978 Williams-Cosworth FW06 – The first Patrick Head-designed Williams allowed the team to gain a foothold in the sport and show that Alan Jones had what it took to become Champion
1987 Ford Sierra Cosworth RS500 – the archetypal touring car from the 1980s will rekindle its rivalry with the BMW 3-series
2006 Williams-Cosworth FW28 – it is hoped that the Williams team will bring its latest Cosworth-powered car to the Festival

Ferrari celebrates Grand Prix and Targa Florio success. The most evocative name in motor sport enjoyed enviable success on the Sicilian Targa Florio race. A legion of rare Ferraris will be at the Festival, including:
1950 Ferrari 166MM – the first successful Ferrari competition car was victorious on the 1950 Mille Miglia (Bracco/Maglioli) and placed 7th in the Targa Florio, driven by Luigi Villoresi
1950 Ferrari 166/212 American – one of the first Ferrari Grand Prix cars
1952 Ferrari 375 ‘Grant Piston Ring Special’ – one of four modified 4.5-litre Ferraris entered for the 1952 Indy 500, driven by Danny Oakes
1952 Ferrari 500/625 – this Ferrari was used for four seasons 1952-55, and famously beat the all-conquering Mercedes-Benz W196 at Monaco in 1955
                                    1958 Ferrari 250 TR58 – the archetypal 1950s Ferrari sports-racer, which won the Targa Florio in 1958
1960 Ferrari 246 Dino – the last truly competitive front-engined GP contender, in which Mike Hawthorn won the 1958 title. Phil Hill then won the 1960 Italian GP in this unique car (since fitted with a 3-litre engine), the last for a front-engined car
1961 Ferrari 250 TRI/61 – the actual winner of the 1961 Le Mans 24 Hours, driven by Phil Hill and Olivier Gendebien
1963 Ferrari 250 GTO 64 – one of the prettiest and most successful GT cars of all time. This car was winner of the 1963 Goodwood TT and was subsequently rebodied into its more streamlined shape for the 1964 season
1964 Ferrari 158 – the sole surviving example of John Surtees' World Championship-winning car, in which he took victory in the 1964 Italian GP
1969 Ferrari 712 – the biggest and most powerful Ferrari ever built, developed for the unlimited CanAm series and driven by Andretti, Jarier and Redman
1972 Ferrari 312PB – these 3-litre flat-12 Boxer cars won all 11 races started in 1972, including the Targa Florio, and charged on dominantly through 1973
2003 Ferrari 550 Maranello – heroic Le Mans project by the British Prodrive company, intended primarily to provide a customer car for privateers to tackle the great race

Ford focuses on its rallying exploits. Ford TransAm and rally cars will feature strongly at the Festival. Expect to see:
1965 Ford GT40 MkII – this car has been on Ford’s Press Fleet since new. Now, 40 years later, it marks the anniversary of the famous hat-trick by wearing the famous colours once more.
1970 Ford Mustang Boss 302 – the car in which Parnelli Jones took the TransAm title

1985 Mercury Capri TransAm – badged a Mercury for the Ford USA market, this fire-breathing Capri made Wally Dallenbach Jnr the youngest-ever TransAm champion

1970 McLaren-Chevrolet M8F – one of the last McLarens shipped to the USA to challenge the mighty CanAm Porsches. Initially the class of the field, these cars raced on until 1973, eventually being fitted with a Chevy turbo to counter the increasingly dominant Porsches
1972 McLaren-Chevrolet M20 – The last-ever CanAm car built by the extremely successful team set up by Kiwi F1 ace Bruce McLaren, by which time Bruce had already lost his life in a testing accident at Goodwood
1981 March-Chevrolet 817 – after the demise of the original CanAm championship in 1974 due to a recession in North America, the series was revived in 1977 using chassis from the recently cancelled Formula 5000 single-seater series, rebodied into full-width centre-seat sports cars. This is a rarely-seen example, originally raced by Danny Sullivan
1988 Chevrolet Monte Carlo – ex-Dale Earnhardt NASCAR stocker

Honda celebrates its enviable Grand Prix history. One of the greatest companies in F1 history will celebrate its illustrious Championship-winning heritage at the Festival. Having already established an unparalleled record in motorcycle racing, Honda won a Grand Prix in its first full F1 season, then went on to become the most successful engine supplier of the turbo era in the 1980s, and is once again at the forefront of the current F1 grid. Expect to see:
1968 Honda RA300 – the Italian GP-winning RA300 from 1968 will be put through its paces by original driver John Surtees
1987 Williams-Honda FW11 – the 1000bhp 1.5-litre turbo in which Nelson Piquet pipped team-mate Nigel Mansell to the title by the narrowest of margins
1988 McLaren-Honda MP4/4 – the legendary Championship-winning car, in which Ayrton Senna and Alain Prost won 15 races out of 16, and would have made a clean sweep but for Senna tripping over a back-marker while leading the Italian GP
2005 Honda Integra R – last season’s British Touring Car Championship winner, in which Matt Neal (who will drive at Goodwood) became the first privateer to win the title since the Supertouring category began

In addition to its great F1 cars, Honda will bring a selection of fantastic GP motorcycles to the event. Please see separate story for details.

Mouth-watering collection of Jaguar’s famous sports cars. Jaguar sports cars will again feature heavily at the Festival, representing a concise history of the famous marque, including:
1953 Jaguar C-type – with a handsome wind-cheating aluminium body designed by Malcolm Sayer on an XK120 chassis, Jaguar won at Le Mans in 1951 and again in 1953, innovating the use of disc brakes
                                    Jaguar D-type – the three-time Le Mans-winning aerodyne
1963 Jaguar E-type lightweight –this slippery Malcolm Sayer-designed low-drag car is the only Jaguar ever to beat Ferrari GTOs in a significant event – at Reims, France, 1963
1975 Jaguar E-type ‘XJR1’ – US Jaguar developer Bob Tullius ran a prototype V12 E-Type through 1974, winning B-Prod Regional title in his famous ‘Group 44’ liveried car. Tullius won 1977-78 TransAm titles, too.
1976 Jaguar XJR2 TransAm – moving on from the experimental E-type, Bob Tullius used a racing version of the XJS to dominate the SCCA TransAm Championship, winning back-to-back titles in 1977-78. Tullius still owns the car and will drive it at Goodwood
1989 Jaguar XJR12 – which took a second win in three years for Jaguar at Le Mans, this time with Martin Brundle/John Nielsen/Price Cobb in 1990
2005 Jaguar XK8 TransAm – it is hoped that reigning TransAm champion Klaus Graf will drive his works-assisted Jaguar

Land Rover demonstrates its amazing all-terrain prowess. This year Goodwood is delighted to announce new partnerships with Land Rover, which will provide sensational all-terrain driving demonstrations throughout the weekend using its unique Terrapod and G4 extreme obstacle packages. These unique metal off-road courses simulate a variety of terrain, including steel inclines and rocky surfaces, thereby demonstrating Land Rover’s incredible off-road capabilities, including hill descent control and electronic traction control. Land Rover will also provide its latest Range Rover Sport Supercharged to act a course car during the Supercar Run.

Mercedes-Benz remembers its breath-taking ‘Silver Arrows’. In recognition of its unsurpassed Grand Prix heritage, a fabulous collection of Mercedes-Benz cars is expected at the Festival, including:
1906 Mercedes GP – now running for the first time in a generation, this fabulous chain-drive Mercedes took part in the first ever Grand Prix race
1908 Mercedes GP – this big 13-litre chain-drive Mercedes dominated the French GP in 1908, with Christian Lautenschlager winning the 477-mile race at 69mph, and team-mate Otto Salzer breaking the lap record on his first circuit at an average of 78.5mph
1937 Mercedes-Benz W125 – successor to the ground-breaking W25 of 1934, this car continued the ‘Silver Arrows’ tradition of total dominance in Grand Prix racing, driven by von Brauchitch and Caracciola. It took wins at Tripoli and AVUS; 1-2 at Germany, Italy and Brunn; plus 1-2-3 at Monaco and Switzerland
1939 Mercedes-Benz W154 – though new rules demanded a 3-litre engine limit, still the 480bhp supercharged V12 ‘Silver Arrows’ dominated the 1939 Grand Prix season, with Hermann Lang taking four victories and Rudi Caracciola winning his last German GP
1955 Mercedes-Benz W196 – the car that carried Juan Manuel Fangio to back-to-back World Championships in 1954 and 1955
2005 McLaren-Mercedes MP4/20 – last season’s race-winning F1 challenger is expected to be in action on the hill

Nissan recalls its diverse racing history. Nissan demonstrates its wide-ranging involvement in motor sport at the Festival by showcasing cars from a range of disciplines. Expect to see:
1972 Datsun 240Z – the striking 1970s rally car, originally driven by Rauno Aaltonen and Tony Fall, will be in action on the Forest Rally Stage along with its original drivers
1984 Nissan 240RS – this wonderful Group B car was built by Bill Blydenstein for a Middle East Nissan dealer, and was driven by Tony Walker in Jordan in 1984. Tony was given the car at the end of the season and subsequently drove it in the Philippines and Indonesian National Championships. He still retains the car today
1990 Nissan R90 CK06 – Nissan’s World Sports Car Championship contender, which was driven at Le Mans by Martin Brundle, Julian Bailey and Gianfranco Brancatelli. Also raced in Japanese Sports Prototype series 1991-93, driven by Heinz Harald Frentzen to a number of podium finishes
1998 Nissan R390 – raced in the GT1 Sports car category at Le Mans in 1998, this 3.5-litre twin turbo V8 was developed by the famous Tom Walkinshaw Racing team and put the first ever all-Japanese team (Aguri Suzuki/Kazuyoshi Hoshino/Masahiko Kageyama) onto the podium
1999 Nissan Primera BTCC – original driver Anthony Reid, who won seven BTCC races for Nissan in 1998, will drive the car in which his replacement Laurent Aiello took the 1999 BTCC title

Peugeot’s rally prowess and supercar status underlined. The Forest Rally Stage will provide the perfect environment for two of Peugeot’s greatest rally cars – hopefully the WRC 307 and certainly a privateer Group B T16 EvoII. T16s are very seldom seen in action, let alone in context with their great rivals of the time. In addition it is hoped that Richard Burns’ own 1991 Group N 205, his 1991/92 RAC Rally Group A 309 and his 2003 206 WRC car will be on static display. For supercar enthusiasts, the amazing 2004 6-litre V12 907 will be shown at Goodwood for the first time.

Porsche proves its Targa Florio pedigree. The Festival habitually features a breathtaking array of important Porsche competition cars and 2006 will be no exception. The company’s own museum will provide a collection of cars to run alongside privately-entered machinery, including:
1956 Porsche 550A Spyder – the first major success for the works Porsche team came when this nimble open sports car won the Targa Florio
1962 Porsche 804 – Porsche’s F1 dream culminated in Dan Gurney winning the 1962 French GP and Solitude GP in Porsche’s ultimate air-cooled flat-8 F1 car
1967 Porsche 907 – ‘Quick’ Vic Elford continued Porsche’s run of Targa Florio wins with a finely-judged drive in 1968
1970 Porsche 908/3 – the new 917 was considered too cumbersome for the tortuous Targa Florio and Nurburgring 1000km races, so Porsche developed this minimalist car, the lightest and most powerful of its type, using a flat-8 air-cooled rear engine. Vic Elford was victorious at both races
1970 Porsche 917K – the car that launched Porsche’s unprecedented run of success at Le Mans and a great Festival favourite
1973 Porsche 911 RSR – The lightweight 911RSR replaced the legendary 917 in sports car racing following the imposition of a 3-litre limit in 1972, and this very chassis took its first and finest major win – on the Targa Florio in 1973, when Gijs van Lennep (who hopefully drives at the Festival) charged to victory
1978 Porsche 911 SC – this car will be in action on the Forest Rally Stage, hopefully driven by original Safari Rally pilot Bjorn Waldegaard
1985 Porsche 959 Paris-Dakar – for its assault on the world’s toughest rally, Porsche produced a 450bhp all-wheel-drive supercar capable of more than 150mph on loose terrain. René Metge took back-to-back victories ahead of team-mate Jacky Ickx, who drives on the Forest Rally Stage at Goodwood
1988 Porsche 962 – the last works car sported Shell/Dunlop livery and brought the factory effort to a close with nothing left to win. Private teams continued its success for several more seasons

Renault recalls its Grand Prix greats. One of the greatest companies in Grand Prix history celebrates its illustrious heritage with a breathtaking automotive sculpture in front of Goodwood House. Renault will also bring some of its most spectacular GP cars to the Festival. Please see separate story for full details.

Rolls-Royce offers the ultimate way to travel. Rolls-Royce Motor Cars, based on the Goodwood estate, will provide its latest Phantom limousine as VIP transport into and out of the event, and provides the Clerk of the Course with his course transport.

Toyota sends rare jewels from Japan. Toyota will once again send several show-stopping cars from its museum in Japan. Expect to see:
1978 Ralt-Toyota RT1 – Toyota built the engine of choice for the International F3 racing, and Ralt the best chassis. A generation of future GP drivers cut their teeth in these cars, notably Jan Lammers in the Team Holland entry
1987 Toyota Celica GTS – raced with factory backing in the American IMSA series from 1983 to 1988 by Dan Gurney’s All-American Racers, winning the GTO Championship in 1987
1990 Toyota Celica GT4 ST165 – Toyota’s first Group A car combined a complex six-speed gearbox and hydraulic centre differential. Although Juha Kankkunen managed only one win in its first two seasons, the car came good in 1990, with Carlos Sainz winning the World Championship. It also carried Bjorn Waldegaard to a Safari rally win, and he will drive it on the Forest Rally Stage
1992 Toyota Celica GT4 ST185 – in action on the Forest Rally Stage is a privately-owned example of one of the most successful rally cars Toyota ever built, which helped Carlos Sainz, Juha Kankkunen and Didier Auriol to World titles in 1992-94
2005 Toyota TF105 – last season’s Toyota Formula 1 car is expected to be driven by Olivier Panis

                                    • Unieke Rolls Royce?

                                      Oorspronkelijk geplaatst door Goodwood website
Sensational Rolls-Royce ‘round door’ to star in 12th annual Cartier ‘Style et Luxe’

                                      16/5/2006

A sensational one-off Rolls-Royce returns to Europe from America for the first time since the 1930s over July 7.8.9 to compete for the prestigious 'best of show' at the 12th Cartier ‘Style et Luxe’ automobile design competition – the Goodwood Festival of Speed’s amazing annual concours.

Known as the 'Round Door Rolls' due to its unique ovoid doors, this long black fastback exotic has had a remarkable life. First owned by an Indian prince, the Rajah of Nanpara, it was rebodied by the little known Belgian coachworks of Henri Jonckheere with a spectacular coupé style body, which immediately became the talk of concours events in the 1930s. After winning the Prix de Cannes on the French Riviera, it was shipped to America but after the Second World War this amazing machine was abandoned in a New York scrap yard. Now meticulously restored for the Petersen Automotive Museum in California, it returns to Europe for the UK's most prestigious concours event together with 50 other amazing machines in the Cartier ‘Style et Luxe’. The 'Round Door Rolls' will feature in a special class 'Deco Dazzlers' which will celebrate the streamlined age of the 1930s.

From the earliest cars of the veteran age to the breathtaking Lamborghini Miura, the Cartier ‘Style et Luxe’ will once again present an array of wildly different automotive forms from all ages. As well as celebrating the 40th anniversary of the Miura – the iconic Marcello Gandini-styled supercar sensation of 1966 with a comprehensive display of Miura types – the event will also explore the alternative powers options available for intrepid motorists from the earliest age. Steam, electric and internal combustion engine variants will be presented in the event's unique style for its star-studded jury to review.

Racy small capacity sports cars from the 1920s will evoke the marvelous photographs of master French photographer Jacques-Henri Lartique in a display that matches Salmson, Amilcar, Bugatti and Morgan three-wheeler together. The ‘Style et Luxe’ will also celebrate the anniversary of another sport car ‘tour de force’, the advanced and exquisitely formed 1936 BMW 328. To underline the brilliance of this Bavarian built marvel, the event will present the 328 with period rivals in a special class of 'Streamlined Roadsters' with the period best from France, Britain and Italy to match the German pre-war sensation.

Other classes this year will feature the most exotic roadsters from the glamorous 1950s, and trend setting saloons that broke the mould of convention with radical styling for everyday motoring.

Like the world's premier concours events at Pebble Beach and Villa d'Este, the Cartier ‘Style et Luxe’ exhibits the finest examples of each motoring era for critical judgement, but there the comparison ends. In the tranquil setting of the private gardens of Goodwood House, a unique panel from all walks of the creative world survey the entry from their own perspectives. Many of the dozen or so judges know little or nothing about cars, so their aesthetic judgements make a refreshing change to the automotive experts that attend other events.

This year’s judges panel includes Hollywood movie director George Lucas, ballerina Deborah Bull, the designers David Linley and Tom Dixon, and motor guru Jeremy Clarkson, who has become something of a ‘Style et Luxe’ regular. Such a potent cross-section of world famous artists, movie directors, designers, and critics will debate with great passion on Sunday July 9 to determine the prestigious 'best of show.'

As this elite group surveys this marvelous automotive array, their judging task is made all the more enjoyable with the Style et Luxe's unique live jazz sound track. With great live music playing on the Saturday and Sunday, this is a vital occasion for anyone who appreciates the inherent creative magnitude of great automobiles.

The 2006 Goodwood Festival of Speed takes place on July 7.8.9 at Goodwood House, Chichester, West Sussex, England.

Entry is strictly by advance ticket only.

To order advance tickets, please contact the Ticket Hotline by telephone on +44 1243 755055, fax on +44 1243 755058 or email via: bookings@goodwood.co.uk; otherwise, book online via the Online Ticket Section of this website.

Showcase for all new Supercars as the Sunday Times ‘Driving’ Supercar Run promises numerous world debuts

                                        16/5/2006

Over the last few years the Festival of Speed has established an unrivalled reputation as a place to see the latest and greatest supercars from around the world. Nowhere else are so many new models shown to the public in action for the first time. Last year, an amazing 15 world debuts of ultimate supercars took place, witnessed by the 150,000 attending. And some cars, such as the Alfa Romeo Brera, had yet even to be unveiled to the Press. Highlights in 2005 included the sensational Pininfarina Maserati Birdcage 75 – made to run specifically for the event, and the incredible Venturi Fétish from Monaco, with its electric power and huge acceleration. 2006 will be just as exciting.

The Sunday Times ‘Driving’ Supercar Run promises the latest supercars from all the key manufacturers. Heading up the entry will be the unrivalled Bugatti Veyron, together with the UK unveiling of the new Ferrari 599GTB. In fact, Ferrari is planning to have quite a broad range of cars in action, including 612 Scaglietti and the sensational FXX. Audi is hoping to have its new R8 road supercar at the Festival, based on the Le Mans car – while Porsche will exercise the new 997 Turbo, to say nothing of the incredible Cayenne Turbo S. Peugeot are promising their amazing V12 907, too. More extraordinary cars from bespoke manufacturers, such as the 200 mph Freestream T1, are also expected, even in pre-production form. The amazing Freestream – designed, developed and built by a squad of ex-McLaren engineers – is not due in production until later in the year. Joining it will be Prodrive’s one-off P2 concept car, designed and built entirely in-house at Prodrive in under nine months, just to show what they can do! Based on Subaru STi running gear, it’s a 2-litre turbocharged well-equipped two-seater sports car.

While more mainstream high performance products like the new BMW Z4M coupe will be on show, so too will large manufacturers’ technology-leading concepts. Nissan is planning to bring its Urge – a radical, lightweight two-seat, motorcycle-inspired concept designed and built by Nissan in California as a market tester from sub 350Z. It will be joined by other high-technology models, including, we hope, the incredible Acabion motorcycle based eco-sports car from Switzerland.

“The inclusion of very high-efficiency, cutting edge technology vehicles in the Sunday Time Supercar Run and elsewhere at the Festival of Speed is very important to us, explains Lord March, founder and host of the Goodwood Festival of Speed. “It is a hugely exciting area and one we are very keen to promote, not only with our larger industry partners, but also for smaller manufacturers. Such clever and interesting small sports cars contrast appropriately with the established ‘big bangers’ that we know and love. There’s room for it all at the Festival of Speed and there is an important educational and aspirational job to be done.

In all, nearly 50 great supercars will be in action on the Hill. From the new Mercedes-Benz CL to the Lamborghini Murcielago LP640 and Maserati GranSport MC Victory, it will certainly be a true feast for the senses.

The course car for the Supercar Run this year with be the sensational new Range Rover Sport Supercharged HST with full Stormer pack – the radical options pack allowing the Range Rover Sport customer to drive the closest thing there is to the Range Stormer – the company’s first ever concept vehicle shown at the Detroit Show
                                        in January 2004.

Petty and Gurney Head a mouth-watering collection of Stars and Cars from the USA

                                          16/5/2006

Over the years the Festival has established an enviable reputation for attracting some of the USA’s most spectacular racing stars and cars. This year, the most successful NASCAR driver of all time, Richard Petty, will come to the Festival for the first time to be reunited with his 1972 Dodge Charger. Petty’s incredible record of 200 NASCAR wins gives him almost double the tally of his nearest rival (David Pearson on 105 who, incidentally, attended the Festival in 2003) and makes him a living legend.

Joining Petty will be perhaps the USA’s most versatile driver ever. Dan Gurney proved himself in Midget racing and on the Bonneville Salt Flats, then went on to become one of the world’s top drivers of the 1960s, winning Grands Prix and the Le Mans 24 Hour race. He began building his own cars in the 1960s and his AAR Eagle team went on to dominate Indycar racing in the 1970s, as well as IMSA sports car racing in the early 1990s. Gurney will drive a variety of cars at the Festival, including an Eagle-Weslake F1 car and a Ford GT40 like that in which he won at Le Mans.

Lord March said: “I am thrilled that Dan can join us once again, as I have always been a great admirer of both his driving and his beautiful Eagle cars. But to have Richard Petty at the Festival is a dream come true! It’s always a great honour when a legendary driver agrees to visit Goodwood, and I know his many fans in the UK will give him a very special welcome.

With the Festival celebrating 100 Years of Grands Prix, it’s no surprise that some important GP cars are travelling to Goodwood from the USA specifically for the Festival. The Indianapolis Motor Speedway Hall of Fame Museum fields a 1907 Renault and a rare 1908 Mercedes GP, and joining these will be a 1911 FIAT, 1958 Vanwall, John Surtees’ 1964 title-winning Ferrari 158 and a </B>1967 Eagle-Weslake</B> from a variety of important private collections.

To mark 40 Years of TransAm, the Festival will welcome everything from the title-winning </B>1970 Ford Mustang Boss 302</B> of Parnelli Jones and </B>Jaguar XJS</B> and Bob Tullius to two dominant cars from the legendary Roush Racing – the 1985 Mercury Capri and 1997 Ford Mustang. It is also hoped that the ever-versatile </B>Parnelli Jones</B> can be here too, if his schedule allows it, to drive both his TransAm car and an Indycar.

The great CanAm sports car series is represented by a brace of fabulous orange McLaren-Chevrolets. In addition, important Indycars include one of the last front-engined roadsters – a 1964 Watson-Offenhauser owned by Bob McConnell, one of the biggest collector of Indy Roadsters in the US – and one of the first Dan Gurney-built </B>Eagle-Offenhauser</B> cars from 1969.
