WRC Teams set to star on redesigned Forest Rally Stage
16/5/2006
The forest on the hillside above Goodwood House will throng to the sound of both historic rally cars and the latest WRC cars as the Festival of Speed builds on the success of last summer’s exciting new Forest Rally Stage.
With no World Rally Championship date clash this year, several of the top WRC teams and drivers will be on hand to provide a thrilling demonstration of sideways driving. Ford M-Sport and Prodrive’s Subaru team have both confirmed, and it is expected that Citroën and Skoda will also attend, hopefully joined by Mitsubishi and Peugeot too.
Former Champions Colin McRae, Petter Solberg and Marcus Gronholm will take part, along with rising star Matthew Wilson. It is hoped that reigning Champion Sebastien Loeb and several other top stars will also drive in what is set to become a fund-raising event in memory of two of rallying’s most popular figures. In September 2005, Peugeot’s Michael Park – who co-drove for Estonian Markko Martin – was killed in an accident on the Rally GB; and a few weeks later, in November, England’s only World Champion Richard Burns lost a long battle against cancer.
The WRC drivers will experience a much improved course from that used at Goodwood for the inaugural Forest Rally Stage in 2005. Over the winter, the stage has been made bigger and better – thanks largely to rallying legend and former World Champion Hannu Mikkola, who acted as Goodwood’s consultant. Cars now drive down the original stage – widened in places to make it faster, safer and more spectacular – but instead of returning to the start/finish via the same route, cars now use a series of new cuttings designed by ‘Flying Finn’ Mikkola to make a high-speed circuit. This allows for more than one car on the stage at one time, better spectating and an increase in the action and excitement.
Lord March said: “Hannu was a natural choice as our consultant – his career spans the whole spectrum of rallying, from rear-wheel-drive cars of the 1960s, through the Group B era with Audi and right up to comparatively modern cars of the 1990s. It’s a privilege to work with the man voted the greatest rally driver of all time by Motorsport magazine.
In addition to the WRC cars, this summer’s Forest Rally Stage will see around 30 cars from the history of rallying in action throughout all three days of the event. Cars range from early Sixties machines like the Mini Cooper S and Saab 96 through to more contemporary machinery such as Lancia Delta Integrale and Toyota Celica GT4. The ubiquitous Ford Escort Mk1 and Mk2 take part alongside such legendary Group 4 machines as the Lancia Stratos and Talbot Sunbeam Lotus. And awesome fire-breathing Group B rally cars – so bad they were banned in the 1980s – are out in force. You can see Audi Quattro Sport, Lancia Rallye 037, Peugeot 205 T16, Renault 5 Maxi Turbo, MG Metro 6R4, Ford RS200, Opel Manta 400, Lancia Delta S4 and Nissan 240RS.
With so many of the world’s great rally drivers attending, there are sure to be some emotive reunions of star and car. Hannu Mikkola will be reunited with an Audi Quattro A2; Sandro Munari will be in action in a Lancia Stratos; Bjorn Waldegaard – rallying’s first ever World Champion – will drive a Toyota Celica GT4; BMC legend Rauno Aaltonen will be back in a Mini Cooper and an Austin Healey 3000; British hero Russell Brookes will drive his famous ‘Andrews Heat for Hire’ Opel Manta 400; and 1970s star Tony Fall will drive a Datsun 240Z. Joining them will be former British Champions Gwyndaf Evans and Marcus Dodd.
