WRC Teams set to star on redesigned Forest Rally Stage

    16/5/2006

The forest on the hillside above Goodwood House will throng to the sound of both historic rally cars and the latest WRC cars as the Festival of Speed builds on the success of last summer’s exciting new Forest Rally Stage.

With no World Rally Championship date clash this year, several of the top WRC teams and drivers will be on hand to provide a thrilling demonstration of sideways driving. Ford M-Sport and Prodrive’s Subaru team have both confirmed, and it is expected that Citroën and Skoda will also attend, hopefully joined by Mitsubishi and Peugeot too.

Former Champions Colin McRae, Petter Solberg and Marcus Gronholm will take part, along with rising star Matthew Wilson. It is hoped that reigning Champion Sebastien Loeb and several other top stars will also drive in what is set to become a fund-raising event in memory of two of rallying’s most popular figures. In September 2005, Peugeot’s Michael Park – who co-drove for Estonian Markko Martin – was killed in an accident on the Rally GB; and a few weeks later, in November, England’s only World Champion Richard Burns lost a long battle against cancer.

The WRC drivers will experience a much improved course from that used at Goodwood for the inaugural Forest Rally Stage in 2005. Over the winter, the stage has been made bigger and better – thanks largely to rallying legend and former World Champion Hannu Mikkola, who acted as Goodwood’s consultant. Cars now drive down the original stage – widened in places to make it faster, safer and more spectacular – but instead of returning to the start/finish via the same route, cars now use a series of new cuttings designed by ‘Flying Finn’ Mikkola to make a high-speed circuit. This allows for more than one car on the stage at one time, better spectating and an increase in the action and excitement.

Lord March said: “Hannu was a natural choice as our consultant – his career spans the whole spectrum of rallying, from rear-wheel-drive cars of the 1960s, through the Group B era with Audi and right up to comparatively modern cars of the 1990s. It’s a privilege to work with the man voted the greatest rally driver of all time by Motorsport magazine.

In addition to the WRC cars, this summer’s Forest Rally Stage will see around 30 cars from the history of rallying in action throughout all three days of the event. Cars range from early Sixties machines like the Mini Cooper S and Saab 96 through to more contemporary machinery such as Lancia Delta Integrale and Toyota Celica GT4. The ubiquitous Ford Escort Mk1 and Mk2 take part alongside such legendary Group 4 machines as the Lancia Stratos and Talbot Sunbeam Lotus. And awesome fire-breathing Group B rally cars – so bad they were banned in the 1980s – are out in force. You can see Audi Quattro Sport, Lancia Rallye 037, Peugeot 205 T16, Renault 5 Maxi Turbo, MG Metro 6R4, Ford RS200, Opel Manta 400, Lancia Delta S4 and Nissan 240RS.

With so many of the world’s great rally drivers attending, there are sure to be some emotive reunions of star and car. Hannu Mikkola will be reunited with an Audi Quattro A2; Sandro Munari will be in action in a Lancia Stratos; Bjorn Waldegaard – rallying’s first ever World Champion – will drive a Toyota Celica GT4; BMC legend Rauno Aaltonen will be back in a Mini Cooper and an Austin Healey 3000; British hero Russell Brookes will drive his famous ‘Andrews Heat for Hire’ Opel Manta 400; and 1970s star Tony Fall will drive a Datsun 240Z. Joining them will be former British Champions Gwyndaf Evans and Marcus Dodd.

Renault Celebrates 100 Years Of Grand Prix Success

        16/5/2006

One of the greatest companies in Grand Prix history celebrates its illustrious heritage with a breathtaking automotive sculpture in front of Goodwood House. Renault’s structure will be one of the most striking ever constructed for the Festival, representing the uniquely French culture of the legendary manufacturer.

Having already won the 1902 Paris-Vienna race in great style, Renault cemented its place in history when their driver François Szisz won the first ever Grand Prix race, which was held on a 60-mile circuit east of Le Mans. Renault also introduced turbocharging to F1 in the 1970s, setting a trend that redefined the sport. After the end of the turbo era, it was once again Renault’s innovation that won through when, as an engine supplier to teams such as Williams and Benetton, its revolutionary V10 set new standards and dominated throughout the 1990s. Now building its own chassis again, the company is at the forefront of F1, having won the Constructors’ Championship in 2005 and also the Drivers’ title with Spaniard Fernando Alonso, F1’s youngest ever champion.

To mark its glorious achievements, Renault fields at the Festival a breathtaking collection of Renault and Renault-powered racing cars. Operating from beneath the artistic structure in front of Goodwood House are two 1907 Renaults. These are survivors from a batch of 10 cars based on the legendary 1906 French GP winner, which no longer survives, and which were constructed for racing in the USA’s Vanderbilt Cup. It is also hoped that a recently-built exact replica of the cost 1906 car will be completed in time for the Festival. Joining these will be the Mild Seven Renault F1 team with its latest R26 car. It is expected that Giancarlo Fisichella will drive on Sunday.

In addition, Renault’s first turbo F1 car, the RS01, will take to the hill alongside the RE30C turbo – which will be demonstrated by original driver René Arnoux. An ex-Ayrton Senna Lotus-Renault 97T driven by his nephew Bruno joins Championship-winning Williams-Renault FW16B (originally driven by Damon Hill) and Benetton-Renault B195 (originally driven by Michael Schumacher).

Meanwhile, on the Forest Rally Stage an ex-Jean Ragnotti Renault 5 Maxi Turbo makes the mud fly in a series of spectacular demonstrations.

          • Nigell Mansell maakt er zijn debuut

Mansell to make his Goodwood debut

            16/5/2006

People’s Champion Nigel Mansell has confirmed that he will make his debut appearance at this year’s Goodwood Festival of Speed on 7.8.9. July.

Britain’s best-loved racer is set to wow the British motor racing public, as he drives a series of demonstration runs on the famous Goodwood hillclimb course during all three days of the event.

Said Nigel: “I am delighted to be invited to Goodwood, as I have heard many good things about the event. I am really looking forward to driving some of my old cars again, and being able to put on a show for the British fans who have always supported me so brilliantly.

The former Grand Prix and Indycar Champion – and the only man to win these titles in consecutive years – is expected to drive several of the F1 cars from his illustrious career, including a JPS-liveried Lotus 91 from his early career, (the last Colin Chapman GP-winning car), plus one of his famous Williams GP cars. Goodwood is also hopeful that one or two other famous ex-Mansell racers will be confirmed shortly.

“We are absolutely thrilled that Nigel Mansell has agreed to come to Goodwood for the first time, Said the Earl of March, who is the driving force behind the Festival of Speed. “He is an all-time British hero and a great ambassador for motor sport, so it is entirely appropriate that he is here this year to help celebrate our theme, which is ‘Racing for Glory – a Century of Grands Prix’. I am sure that his many fans will relish the opportunity to see him drive his famous old cars, and that they’ll give him a fantastic welcome, just as they always have.

Joining Nigel in action on the hill will be his racing sons, Greg and Leo, who will drive their 140bhp Formula BMW cars, sponsored by Unipart. Both are currently contesting the prestigious Formula BMW UK Championship series, which is the world’s leading entry-level class in Formula racing. Nigel plays an ambassadorial role in the series, working with the BMW Education and Coaching Programme to help talented young drivers cope with the various demands of professional motor racing and hopefully groom some F1 stars of the future.

The brothers are supported by Festival sponsor Unipart Automotive, the UK’s largest independent supplier of aftermarket automotive components. The move reaffirms a long-standing relationship, as Unipart backed Nigel throughout his Formula 3 years from 1979. As well as watching the boys drive their Unipart-liveried cars, visitors to the Festival will have the chance to meet Leo and Greg on Unipart’s exhibition stand and get a close look at the cars in which the boys are competing during the 20-race 2006 championship.

Said Unipart Automotive marketing director Andrew Daly: “It’s wonderful to extend our motor sport portfolio by supporting Leo and Greg. In 1979 Unipart backed a talented young driver – and look what happened to him! We are now proud to be able to support Nigel’s sons as they embark on an equally exciting journey.

Of 4 pond, moet het eens nakijken... Iig, zo'n groot verschil is het niet. Ik heb alvast kaarten besteld voor een heel week-end.

Die van Turboman liggen ook nog hier. Moet daar echt eens werk van maken.

Ow f*ck. Ik had het op m'n to do lijstje gezet zodat ik het zeker niet zou vergeten. Maar ben het to do lijstje kwijtgespeeld
