    Electronic Arts' Need For Speed series has followed a long, winding road since first appearing on the 3DO in 1995. What started out as a very typical racer has since dipped into the car tuner scene with Underground and the, uh, real underworld with the wickedly fun Hot Pursuit offshoots. Need For Speed: Most Wanted is the series' latest mutation, this time tossing a bit of everything into the pot. You've got small races, you've got extensive car tuning, and you've got cops on your six from the get-go.

    You've also got an expanded new world to drive around in, a large, seamless environment with no loading to slow things down. From here you can find small, three-rival races to take part in or perhaps indulge in some high-stakes games of chicken with the cops. Whatever you end up doing, success will ultimately add to your street cred, paving the way toward bigger bucks, more car upgrades, and a vague buzz of raging testosterone.

    The TGS demo was composed of two segments, one of a typical race and one of a cop pursuit. The race proved pretty typical for the series; the driving mechanics are solid enough, the physics feel good, and so on. One neat new feature comes in the "speed-breaker," which is a sort of driving bullet-time you can engage every now and then to extract ridiculous response from your ride. The narrowest of hairpins can be navigated with ease with proper use of the speed-breaker, but it's a limited resource that must be recharged between uses. (The same goes for the speed-boosting nitro.)



    The pursuit sequence proved similarly solid. The idea is to evade the cops on your tail, but just staying away isn't good enough. You actually have to be completely out of their sight before the heat starts going down, as indicated by a meter on the screen. As long as they're tailing (or leading) you you won't be getting any closer to that evasion. So, you have to play it smart or play it hard; you could try losing them with tricky maneuvering, or just throw up your hands and go for the takedown. The cops, for their part, keep up a constant and convincing chatter during the chase, calling for help and discussing tactics as they implement them.

    This cop AI is actually one of the areas that will be enhanced for the Xbox 360 version of the game. The 360 can throw more cops at you at once, and their tactics will be suitably enhanced, right down to strategic use of tacks, roadblocks, helicopters, and so on. Of course, the other obvious improvement comes in the graphics, which blow away those of the Xbox and especially PS2 versions. Bump-mapping, huge textures, widescreen, high-res, and lots of extra polygonal detail make Most Wanted a pretty handsome racer, at least by current-gen standards. It still needs work in the framerate department, but EA notes that performance is not finalized. Our guess is it'll lock at 30 fps, but we'll see.

    Need For Speed: Most Wanted looks like another solid entry for EA's flagship racing franchise. While its technological prowess is likely being held back by the game's need to appear on the lesser platforms of PS2 and Xbox, it definitely looks to give a decent taste of what we can expect from a next-gen Need For Speed experience. Consider this the enjoyable warm-up lap, and anticipate what we'll find further down this winding road.

                                    Hopelijk kan mijn PC dit aan, lijkt me eindelijk nog eens de moeite.

                                    NFS is misschien het spel dat ik uit mijn kindertijd niet snel zal vergeten, gewoon zalig om te spelen
