New Mazda CX-4 Sports Crossover’s Name Confirmed

We’ve known for a while now what the production version of Mazda’s Koeru Concept from 2015 will look like, but these fresh scoops finally answer the lingering naming question. Mazda’s first entry in the coupé-like SUV segment will be called the CX-4.

Even though this example of the CX-4 is riding on fairly small alloy wheels that ultimately detract from its appearance, leaving a rather huge gap between the tires and the fenders, you can tell that the design was kept close to the striking concept.

Lower, sleeker and sportier than the CX-5, the new CX-4 should have a similar footprint to the Koeru study at around 4.6 meters (181 inches) long and 1.9 meters (74.8 inches) wide, with a 2.7 meter (106 inches) wheelbase, offering space for five passengers inside.

The CX-4 won’t be only about looks, as Mazda CEO Masamichi Kogai recently told Autonews that the production version of the concept would provide “more driving pleasure” than the brand’s other crossovers. Given that the CX-5 scores well in the handling department, it sounds like the CX-4 will be the kind of car you’d enjoy behind the wheel.

Of course, Mazda will have to up its engine game, so here’s hoping that they’ll offer the new turbocharged 2.5-liter four-cylinder that just made its debut in the latest CX-9.

Look for the new CX-4 to debut later this year, and go on sale in early 2017.

These Are The Mazda CX-4 Images Everyone's Been Waiting For

Shedding its camouflage and leaving the dark background aside, the newest member of Mazda's crossover family, the CX-4, reveals its shape just hours after it published a set of teaser images.

Adopting a similar coupe-like profile as BMW's X4 and Mercedes-Benz's GLC Coupe, the CX-4 wears Mazda's signature grille, flanked by slim headlights with LED technology, while at the rear, the automaker has thrown in taillights similar to what can be found on the rest of the range, joined together by a chrome strip. The model's signature cue is the rakish roofline, which gives it a sportier stance.

Inside, the crossover has a dashboard that mirrors the one from the Mazda3, with a floating center display controllable through the rotary knob fitted behind the gearshift lever, identical dials that sit behind a multi-function steering wheel and what seems to be an electronic parking brake.

China's Auto163 reports that the Mazda CX-4 will get two four-cylinder petrol engines, a 158 HP 2.0-liter and a 192 HP 2.5-liter, adopted from the CX-5. Speaking of the CX-5, the sportier CX-4 is said to be 78 mm longer and 175 mm lower, while maintaining the same width and wheelbase length.

At the moment, rumor has it that Mazda will only offer the CX-4 exclusively in China. Full details on the crossover will be announced on April 25, when it will debut at the Beijing Auto Show.

Mazda CX-4 Coupe Wants To Challenge Range Rover's Evoque

Dropping the rear doors from Mazda's latest SUV has made it even sexier over the one that debuted in Beijing.

Less practical, too, but choosing a CX-4 instead of, say, a CX-5 means looks are higher on one's priorities' list anyway.

Whether it would actually trouble the Evoque Coupe is irrelevant, for it will remain a five-door, but this doesn't make TheophilusChin's work any less realistic.

Never mind the Coupe; Mazda says the CX-4 has been launched as a China-exclusive model. In the local market customers will have a choice of either a 2.0- or a 2.5-liter four, rated at 156 HP and 189 HP respectively, sent to all four corners through a 6-speed automatic gearbox.

A pity, for, unless Mazda execs reverse their decision in the future, the rest of the world will miss out on this nicely executed compact coupe-slash-crossover. Maybe next time, then.

CX-4 lijkt dan toch naar US en Europa te komen, op nieuw platform en nieuw design.
